Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire whose traditional industries included wool, brewing, engineering and the tobacco. Today it is still home to Imperial Tobacco but major employers are in the transport and distribution companies, and also include Unilever and Accenture.
The River Great Ouse runs through the centre of town and the area known as The Embankment , alongside the river has attractive gardens. The Priory Country Park to the east of the town is another popular open space. In town there have been major new developments in recent years including Castle Quay and Riverside Square. DeMontfort University has a campus in the town, and Cranfield University is less than 10 miles away.
There are 2 shopping centres and a pedestrianised shopping area with well-known chains including Debenhams, Marks and Spencer and Boots, plus Beales Department Store. There are many pubs, clubs and eateries in and around the town centre. The Bedford Corn Exchange has performances and concerts, and there is a multi-screen cinema at Cineworld. Kempston Outdoor Centre on the outskirts of the town has a climbing wall, canoeing and kayaking.
Bedford’s mainline station has services to London St. Pancras, and Brighton to the south and Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds to the North. The town is on the A6, with the A1 and the M1 motorways within a few miles to the east and west. London (57 miles) and Cambridge (30 miles) are within easy reach.
The nearest airport to the town is Luton Airport, which can be reached by train from Bedford via Luton Airport Parkway station.
