Cambridge

Cambridge is a world famous city and home to the University of Cambridge.  The city’s skyline is dominated by two university buildings – King’s College Chapel and the Cambridge University Library.  It is a city steeped in history but is also at the heart of an area dubbed ‘Silicon fen’ as a result of the many high tech businesses that have been established in conjunction with colleges.  Anglia Ruskin University and Cambridge Science Park are also located in the city.

The River Cam, famous for the punting, and the University rowing clubs, flows through the city with large green areas open space such as Jesus Green, Parker’s Piece and Midsummer Common along the river banks.  The historic University colleges with their gardens and cobbled streets can be found in the city centre, alongside more contemporary University buildings.

The Grand Arcade is one of two new shopping centres in Cambridge, with main high street stores and eateries including LK Bennett, Gerry Weber, Warehouse and Carluccio’s Deli and Restaurant.  There is a John Lewis Department Store and plenty of bookshops and specialist shops in the central pedestrianised streets.  There is a market place six days a week in the historic market place.

There are nearly 150 restaurants catering for all tastes in central Cambridge plus historic pubs, trendy bars and numerous cafes.  The Corn Exchange is the main theatre and, The Shed, part of the Junction complex in Cambridge Leisure Park hosts live music, comedy and night clubs.  Many colleges have their own smaller theatres and live music venues.  There are 3 multi-screen cinema complexes in the city.

Cambridge is around 50 miles north-east of London.  The train station is about 15 minutes walk from the city centre.  There are services to King’s Cross and Liverpool Street in London, and Peterborough, Norwich and Ipswich.  Cambridge is on of 11 ‘cycling cities’ and has over 80 miles of dedicated cycle lanes and routes.  There is a new Guided Busway providing services through the city.  The nearest airport is London Stansted  – around a 20 minute drive from the city.
