Derby is a vibrant city with great shopping and entertainment available in its compact centre. Historically it was at the heart of Industrial Revolution and home to the production of Royal Crown Derby China. Today Derby’s major employers are in engineering and manufacturing, and include Rolls-Royce plc, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bombardier and Alstom. It is also headquarters for the internet bank, Egg.
Derby Cathedral and other historic buildings can be found in the Cathedral Quarter with the Cathedral Green providing an open space in the heart of the city. Here, you’ll also find many specialist shops, art galleries and cafes in the arcades and along the cobbled streets of the historic quarter. There are many green spaces and parks across the city including Derby Arboretum.
In addition to the Cathedral Quarter the Georgian Friar Gate and Iron Gate areas have popular restaurants, bistros and coffee bars. There are numerous pubs, bars and micro breweries in Derby, which hosts the CAMRA beer festival twice a year.
There are many clubs including Mosh, Zanzibar and The Blue Note. Quad is the new centre for art and film, and there are 3 multi screen twelve screen cinema complexes across the city.
The Westfield is Derby’s main shopping mall with 175 shops, a 12-screen cinema and food hall. There are markets at Eagle Market and Victorian Market Hall plus regular farmers’ and continental markets.
For sports fans Derby County football team play at Pride Park Stadium and the Derbyshire County Cricket Club are based at the County Ground in Derby. The city also has rugby union and league teams.
Derby is close to the M1 motorway providing easy access southwards to the London area and northwards to Sheffield and Leeds. East Midlands Trains have twice-hourly services to London St Pancras, and Sheffield, Nottingham and Leicester are a 30-minute journey by train. East Midlands Airport is situated about fifteen miles from Derby city centre.
