Northampton is a large market town, known historically for its shoemaking companies. Today, many of the old shoe factories have been converted into new offices and flats, and the major employers in the area include Barclaycard, the Nationwide Building Society, Blacks Leisure Group, and the University of Northampton.
The Grosvenor Centre is the main shopping mall with 60 retail outlets, and the pedestrianised streets in the centre of town have many independent and specialist shops. There is a regular market in the historic market square.
Northampton has a range of entertainment with numerous pubs, around 20 nightclubs, and 3 cinemas (2 multi-screens and 1 art house cinema). For live music try the Soundhaus or for bars and restaurants visit the one-stop leisure venue SolCentral. The 900-seat ‘Deco’ theatre , in the renovated historic Cannon Cinema building, has regular performances, and the Fishmarket houses an art gallery, studios, cafe and puts on live music.
For sports fans the town has a Premiership Rugby Union club, the Northampton Saints and League Two football club Northampton. Collingtree Golf Club is located to the south of the town centre, and the nearby Nene Whitewater Centre offers canoeing, kayaking and rafting. Silverstone, the home of the British Formula One Grand Prix is 15 minute drive.
Northampton is conveniently located within 1 hour of London and Birmingham (67 miles London, 50 miles Birmingham). It is close to junctions 15, 15a and 16 of the M1 motorway and there are regular trains to London and Birmingham. Luton and East Midlands Airport are accessible via the M1 and Birmingham International Airport from the M1/M6 and by train.
